Get to know your AFA: Employee Assistance Program
As the holiday season is upon us we may begin to feel the stresses often associated with this traditionally happy time of year. For many of us the holidays are a time to visit with family and friends and to celebrate long held traditions. It may be a time to reflect on the past year and make resolutions for the year to come. Inevitably this time of year also comes with unique stresses, sometimes overwhelming our emotions.
As Flight Attendants we live a unique and varied lifestyle. We often miss family events, celebrations and milestones, all of which seem heightened during the holidays. If we are new to this career our families and friends may find it hard to understand why we can’t be home celebrating with them and if we have been flying for many years they may wonder why we can’t get the time off. In either instance we are faced with explaining, possible for the hundredth time, “we will try to make it”, but “don’t get your hopes up.”
Along with the stresses we may encounter by spending the holidays out on the road we may also find ourselves dealing with financial issues, how to cope with family dynamics (if we make it home), how to manage our time, or recent tragedy, death or break-ups.
To help us cope and “de-stress” the holiday season, the AFA Employee Assistance Program, or EAP, has put together a list of ways to deal with some of the stresses we may experience this time of year.
The Association of Flight Attendants Employee Assistance Program (AFA EAP) is a confidential resource available to the members, their families and their partners to assist with personal, as well as work-related concerns. AFA EAP provides three distinct but interrelated services, including:
1) Assessment, support and resource referral
2) Advancement of professional standards through conflict resolution
3) Response to critical and traumatic incidents.
AFA’s objective in providing these services is to enhance the health, safety and well being of its union family with the highest quality of peer support available within the EAP industry.
If you, or one of your flying partners are in need of the AFA EAP or just curious about the services they offer, please visit their website for more information, or contact the AFA EAP by calling 1-800-424-2406.
