Collective Bargaining
Professional negotiators in the AFA Collective Bargaining Department are focused on obtaining the best Flight Attendant contracts in the industry. They assist each elected AFA Flight Attendant negotiating committee with contract negotiations every step of the way. With more than 100 years of combined negotiating experience, AFA’s professional negotiators are able to leverage that experience in contract negotiations for Flight Attendants. The Negotiation Committee works with professional negotiators, attorneys and consultants throughout the entire process. Negotiation Questions and Answers
Q. Why don’t we get a copy of the contract changes after every negotiation meeting?
A. Reaching a tentative agreement on each section means the Negotiating Committee and management have reviewed, proposed changes, and tentatively agreed to terms within that section. This is completed section by section, and once we have come to a mutual agreement on a complete contract we will have an Agreement in Concept.
A single section tentative agreement could conceivably change later as negotiations continue. Because of the possibility for additional changes, we do not publish tentative agreements. The Negotiating Committee will update Flight Attendants throughout the process with as much information as possible.
Once the Negotiation Committee approves the Agreement in Concept, it will be presented to the Flight Attendants as a full Tentative Agreement (TA) for a ratification vote. In addition to publishing the TA, the Negotiating Committee will host meetings to answer questions and ensure Flight Attendants understand the full TA prior to voting. (credit Alaska Airlines)
Q. How do we know the Negotiation Committee knows what we want?
A. The Committee knows through various means. At the start of the negotiation process, a survey is sent to all Flight Attendants. After that, Flight Attendants are heard during meetings and through suggestions/concerns they’ve sent in. The Negotiation Committee is made up of co-workers who also work within the current contract. They are also very aware of the changes needed to make things better. All information gathered has been put into a database. As each section of the contract is scrutinized, the database is checked against it and concerns are addressed. Once this is done and agree by the Committee, it is presented to the company.
